Doug and I wanted to put together a video to promote the upcoming workshop on 6 Hours to Online Strategy, slated for Monday, November 29th. There are 20 spots and very few left but we wanted to create a video for the social media release that we are putting together with Marketwire. You can register for the event at http://6houronlinemarketingstrategy.eventbrite.com.

As a result, we had an objective (do the video) but this was one of those situations where we had no time, no media room, dysfunctional equipment, and no one to shoot the video. Being 2 resourceful guys we improvised. We met at Mount Royal University, snagged a classroom, set up our cameras on a tripod, hammered out a script (very loose) and shot the video. Here is what we came up with. Enjoy.

http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2009/06/05/do-you-respect-dmoz-after-11-years

Personally, I cannot remember the last time I used an actual directory to find a business. Usually it is Google Maps or some other tool that I use, if I need to find a business close to my house. As evidenced by the dropping traffic numbers of DMOZ, other users are doing the same.

On a side-note, anyone who ever tried submitting to DMOZ will remember how much of a hit-or-miss affair it was to get their site accepted — I sure won’t miss that whole process.

A nice website.. pay per click ads.. social media promotion.. these are all great tools to help your online business succeed, but they’re not going to help you rank on the first page of Google’s search results. And isn’t that what you really want? It’s the cheapest, best advertising you can possibly get on the web. If you ask any SEO pro, they’ll tell you one sure-fire way to help your website rank higher, is to have more links pointing to your site from other websites.

There are many different types of websites that you can add a link to, but be cautious, as you want your link to be relevant to the site. For example, if your website is about sports equipment, you don’t want to ask a blogger that writes about cooking to mention your website in a post. It just wouldn’t make sense, and he/she will just treat it as if it was spam. If you’re constantly doing this, your website could develop a bad reputation. Also, if non-relevant sites do allow you to place your link on their site, you run the risk of getting blacklisted by Google. You can avoid the Google blacklist by always following their guidelines.

There are also other little things you can do to help improve the ranking. When possible, use anchor text with a description of your website and/or key words. For example, if I was going to make a post on this blog to inform someone that Anduro is an SEO firm, I wouldn’t just add the link like this http://www.anduro.com. I’d use anchor text in the hyperlink to make it look something like this, SEO Marketing Calgary. It’s the same results. If you click either of the links, it will bring you to the same webpage, but by using anchor text, Google can see what the website is all about, and this will help your site rank better.
