How does Google decide what order to rank the pages in the search results

This has been a question I’ve heard many time since starting with Anduro, and every time is just as hard to answer because Google will never tell us their exact formula.  But one thing that they have let us in on is that they give every page a ranking from 0 to 10. They call this number the PageRank.  Also, to figure out your website’s PageRank, you can check it at Page Rank Checker. Here’s a thought from Google on PageRank…

“PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page’s importance.”

By “vote”, they mean link. When a website puts a link to your website on their page, that counts as a “vote” towards your page strength. You may now be asking “How do I get people to post a link to my website on their page?”  The James Earl Jones quote from Field of Dreams comes to mind… If you build it, they will link. So to answer that mind boggling question in short, I usually tell people that Google has many ways to figure out if your website is quality or bunk, and they are the ultimate decider. So always put quality before quantity when it comes to your website.
